The Jason Lee McKinney Band is best known for sharing theologically rich country tunes across the globe. But lead singer Jason Lee McKinney has another card up his sleeve – he just released the book What Is a Person in the Age of AI. And in it, he flexes his expertise as a college professor, a doctor, philosopher, award winning artist and Christ follower.
“I wrote this book in response to the growing anthropomorphizing (attribute human characteristics) of artificial intelligence and the philosophical thinness of our current cultural definitions of personhood,” McKinney says.
Asking readers to consider what makes humanity unique, McKinney sees AI as a formative issue for Christians. As the Assistant Professor of Music Business at Belmont university in Nashville, he has seen how changing technology and the development of AI is impacting artists and their audience. In order to combat the negative repercussions of this, McKinney says we need to return to our roots.
“Without a proper framework for understanding AI, we risk losing what makes humanity distinct,” McKinney says.
“Ancient perspective on the self—rooted in the idea that personhood is qualitative and divinely granted—provides a more grounded and enduring foundation than purely modern, quantitative definitions. This foundation is far better equipped to withstand the challenges posed by AI.”
