Take 15: Coqui – Today

We recently had the chance to connect with new DREAM Records artist Coqui ahead of his label debut single “Today”…which dropped today! Read our interview beloq to get to know him and his music a bit better, and listen to Today.

Tell us a little bit about your testimony and how you became a Christian…

So I grew up in a pretty strict Christian household.  My dad was ex military (Marines) and was heavy on discipline and rules. When I turned 18, I moved out of my parent’s house as quick as I could and soon found myself curious about the world. Years of losing myself to pride, vanity and sin lead me to a really dark place where I didn’t even recognize Jesus. It wasn’t until years later (during the pandemic) when I hit rock bottom and finally woke up to the truth. God had revealed to me what I had known the entire time but chose to bury it in my sin. Little by little God was breaking me apart until it was so obvious that I couldn’t ignore it. From that moment on I made a promise to never go back to my old ways and to devote my life to following Jesus.

What’s your favourite thing about your faith?

Finally knowing what my purpose on this earth is.

What is your mission with your music?

Simply to help others find their way back to him, like he did for me. I hope that my music can be a stepping stone for those that are lost in the dark looking for answers. My music isn’t necessarily written for those who are already saved. It’s really for the ones that need saving, like I did.

Who inspired Coqui’s sound?

Haha, that’s quite a broad question! I could spend days naming the songs, albums, and artists that have shaped my music. But if I had to pick the biggest influence, it would definitely be my Dad. He introduced me to music at a very young age. Back in his twenties, he was a club DJ, spinning everything from dance music to top 40 hits, which meant our house was always filled with music. Those tunes laid the groundwork for my understanding of what makes a song truly great.

By the age of 8, I was learning to count BPMs and beat-match records under his guidance. He was also a serious audiophile who knew how to rebuild high-end Italian speakers. He built several sets and taught me how to distinguish the superior sound quality of the more expensive speakers—specifically the way the bass felt deeper and richer. Those lessons play a huge role in how I mix my records today. Pretty often, I find myself recalling his advice when I’m trying to perfect the bass in my own music.

You’ve just signed with DREAM Records, how did that union come about? And why are you excited to work with Lance Brown and the team?

Lance from Dream reached out to me about a year ago after seeing a viral post of mine on Instagram. We had a great conversation about punk rock music, the state of Christian rock, finding our way back to faith, and ultimately what we could accomplish working together . It just seemed like a perfect fit. Shortly after, I signed an awesome deal with them and the rest is history. I’m just grateful for the opportunity. Lance is an absolute legend in his field and it’s a real honor to be working with him.

You’ve just released your label debut song “Today”. What are your favourite lyrics and musical aspects of the track?

That line, ‘Just recognize who’s in control, you don’t need to fight this on your own,’ really resonates with me. It reflects the powerful idea of surrendering your struggles to the Lord, a practice that has deeply strengthened my faith. When it comes to the music, my favorite part has to be the heavy wall of guitars in the chorus. It takes me back to the ’90s summertime vibes, when bands like Oasis dominated the radio. I wanted to capture that nostalgic, heavy guitar sound but with a modern twist.

“Today” talks a lot about fear and anxiety, tell us more about your personal journey with it!

As an adult, it’s often difficult to accept that we’re not in control, especially when life doesn’t go as planned. The pain and suffering we feel usually stem from our reluctance to relinquish control. I was definitely victim to this when I lived in the world. Often relying on my own undertstanding, but never truly finding the right answers. By letting go and finally trusting in God’s plan, no matter the outcome, I finally found true freedom.

One of the verses which helped me gain control over my crippling anxiety a few years ago was Psalm 23, I used to repeat the first line of that over and over ad infinitum whenever I left the house or was stressfully pacing up and down my living room. Eventually that Truth replaced the lies in my head! Which verses or aspects of God’s character have helped you “recognize who’s in control” and “pull you out of the darkness away from this pain”?

Oh yeah, this verse is one of my favorites actually and was the inspiration behind those lyrics. It’s Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Looking ahead, what’s next for you?

Lots more music, a few collabs in the works, more live shows and hopefully a tour in the summer.. All in God’s timing.

And a couple of quick fire questions to get to know you better.

What’s your favourite pizza topping? And does pineapple belong on pizza?

pepperoni & sausage, classic! I have no problem with pineapple

What’s your favourite Bible verse?

Oh man that’s a tough one. First one that comes to mind though is 1 Corinthians 1:27 – “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;”

What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not busy writing songs?

I love to skateboard. Been skating since I was 12 years old. If I wasn’t pursuing a career in music, I’d probably be pursuing a career in skateboarding for sure.

If you could select any song from any artist as a personal theme song that played every time you walked into a room, which song would you choose and why?

Superman by Goldfinger because it was on the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game and was literally the soundtrack to my adolescence.

What’s your favorite dad joke?

How do you make holy water? You boil the hell out of it.

Lastly, how can the JesusWired readers be praying for you over the coming months?

All I ask is that you pray for me to stay on God’s path and not lose sight of why i’m here. It’s only because of him that I get to do any of this.

Thank you for taking the time to “speak” to us today Samuel! “Today” is absolutely fantastic, deep in meaning and musically cheerful, we can’t wait to hear more!
