The Mossy Mosaic: Why Is Good Friday Good?

The Mossy Mosaic: Why Is Good Friday Good?

For the best part of a year now one verse keeps coming up in my bible studies and blowing my mind afresh every time…

‭Matthew 26:39 (NIV‬) “Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Overcome by grief Jesus fell to his knees in the Garden of Gethsemane and poured his heart out to his Father the night before his crucifixion, literally begging for him to take the cup from him, for him to carry out his Father’s will another way, any other way! Not once, but twice (Matthew 26:42 NIV‬ He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”)

Jesus wrestled with what He had to do, pleading for another way, and yet went through with it anyway because it was God’s will.

Imagine what was going through his head at that moment, the physical, mental and spiritual pain he was about to go through, the fact a close friend was about to betray him, the humiliation of it all and so on. No wonder he was sweating blood at that point! It doesn’t even compare to when I’m feeling too weak to carry on and I’m stressed about a test, or a tough conversation i’ve got to face the next day, or have got to do something way outside of my comfort zone. It doesn’t even come close!! Really puts it all in perspective doesn’t it?!

What have I got to worry about when death has already been defeated? What have I got to stress about when Jesus carried that cross on his back? What have I got to feel shame about when God nailed sin and shame to that cross through his son’s crucifixion?

Nothing. That’s what! And that’s why today is good, that’s why today is worth celebrating.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” [Isaiah 53: 5-6]

1 Cross + 3 Nails = 4GIVEN!!
