As a former youth group kid, I’m all too familiar with the call to re-commit my life to Jesus during an altar call. Yet in the new single ”Reconnection” from upcoming soul singer Rekeshia Bennett, this pivotal spiritual step is given new life. In doing so, it invites everyone to reconnect with God in their own, unique way.
In many ways, this bubbly Gospel-fuelled song is a prayer, as Rekeshia reconnects with God after being a self proclaimed “prodigal’s son.” Scripture is weaved through the lyrics with ease, yet by rendering this with her personal story, the singer removes the cliché notion that these are just words written for a Christian radio single. Instead, we realize that these are truths she has lived out and discovered for herself, making the joy-filled song more powerful and approachable.
“Reconnection,” follows the single “God Flow,” which has reached more than 53k hits on YouTube. Yet I think this new offering is Rekeshia’s strongest single to date. Undoubtedly, the highlight of this tune is the chorus. To put it mildly, it’s a bop. And when she delivers a Gospel rendition of “Amazing Grace,” in the bridge, we see just how good Rekeshia could become in the genre.
The most illuminating part occurs in verse two when Rekeshisa addresses the criticism of other Christians that she is not holy enough. It shows her knack for disempowering this destructive mechanism in Evangelical culture through art, and takes an even more profound turn when she addresses her own insecurities. “Let’s be real I have faults, but like you He can change me. There’s no need for perfection cause by His stripes I am healed,” she says.
This gospel tune is an excellent reminder that the genre deserves a more prominent place in Christian music and on radio. And with a fun mix and production that keeps you guessing, it resembles a pop tune but with more depth.
A strong and timely single from one of Christian music’s upcoming artists. “Reconnection” is worth a listen – and an add to your playlist.
