Like a child discovering gifts under the tree on December 25th, Chris Tomlin’s Christmas Songs of Worship at Ferguson Center for the Arts at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia was full of surprises. From the start, unsuspecting concert goers were greeted at the door with Chris Tomlin Christmas cookies as an orchestra ensemble filled the air with holiday classics that would melt the heart of any Grinch. After snapping some selfies in front of the Christmas tree, it was time for everyone to settle into their seats for a night to remember.
Along with unique renditions of familiar carols mixed with the beautiful traditional arrangements of old favorites (see set list below), Grammy-winner Chris Tomlin brought a few surprises for the evening as you can see in the live concert photos. One of my favorite moments was when the band donned pom pom beanies, and “snow” began blanketing the stage during Let It Snow, sending smiles all around.
Besides the gorgeous Christmas decorations reflecting the majesty of the Savior, Nicole Serrano sang of His birth in Noel, shrouded in mist. It was magical. Jorgy-Jacket (Jorge Mhonders) sang a flawless rendition of The Christmas Song, then Tomlin surprised the audience with a hilarious history lesson on the original gloomy lyrics of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Before ending with Silent Night and more of the white stuff, Mr. Tomlin shared a funny but moving story from his childhood involving Christmas lights and candy canes. His last sweet surprise of the evening involved giving everyone a candy cane on their way out to remind them Christmas is God’s great surprise to the world.
