“It’s about exalting the name of Christ.” A Christian university’s choir has suddenly gone viral and the choir’s director says it’s all about making Jesus known. Dr. Marvin Jones is an associate professor at the Olivet University’s School of Music in Bourbonnais, Illinois, and is also the director of the school’s choir, Proclamation Gospel Choir. The choir started in 2002 Jones says with just eight students; since that time it has grown to its current number.
Jones, along with everyone else, he says, was shocked at the response. “We really don’t know what happened,” he said. “I wish I could give a definitive answer,” he said when asked what happened. Jones says that the choir started posting their choir rehearsals live on Facebook last semester. On Monday, September 3rd the choir gathered for their first rehearsal.”We didn’t do anything different,” Jones says. “We just thought we’d continue. Our publicity manager for the choir, she decided to turn on her cell phone and go live . . . and it just took off. It took us all by surprise.” As of Thursday, September 13, the video had over 159,000 shares and had been viewed over 7.2 million times. You can watch the live video of Ride on King Jesus above.
As to why it’s resonating so deeply with people, Jones says he thinks he might know why. “Not only the message of the song, but I think the spirit of the choir themselves. They love the song, they get into the song. It’s sort of been . . . the signature song of the choir.” It was the first rehearsal of the year, and Jones says that they have a large number of new members, but the reason so many already knew the song so well was because the students are taught the song in their audition. “And we tell them this is our signature song so everybody has to know it. So when we got together Monday night for the first time we just said, ‘OK, we’re doing the signature song. Everybody knows it at least most of it. You’ve sung it. Let’s go.’ And it just took off.”
Jones was quick to point out, however, that while they’re excited and shocked by going viral, there’s something more important. “We told the students this past Monday night, ‘Guys we have to remember that it’s not about the video . . . it’s about exalting the name of Christ,’ and that’s the bottom line.”
