What do graffiti, vampires and young Elvis have in common? Answer: They are all featured in films being showcased as part of the first-ever On Location: MEMPHIS Shorts Festival this July.
Slated for each Tuesday evening at the Hard Rock Cafe Memphis on historic Beale Street, the Shorts Festival consists of 13 titles representing six countries. The program is made up of three categories: Live Action, Animation and Documentary. Every week a different category will be presented, with each night’s audience choice being granted automatic entry into the 16th Annual On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Festival in September. The Documentary category kicks off the program on Tuesday, July 7, with Animation taking center stage the following week on Tuesday, July 14. Live Action Shorts round out the program on July 21. The winners from each category will receive encore showings on Tuesday, July 28. The selected films are currently available at www.onlocationmempis.org. Admission to the Shorts Festival is free, however, dinner is not included.
Musical performances are also scheduled throughout the Shorts Festival. On Tuesday, July 7, Memphis’ own Mechelle Johnson will bring her brand of contemporary gospel jazz to the Hard Rock Cafe stage, followed by Horn Lake, Mississippi, soul and R&B artist, 15-year-old Serenity on July 14. On Tuesday, July 21, the Alabama sister trio of JUZANG and Georgia group The Wardlaw Brothers will each showcase their unique contemporary gospel voices. The music program will wrap up with a performance by Memphis hip hop and soul artist Anthony Beasley, Jr. on Tuesday, July 28.
