Jo’s Devotions 05/11/15: Humility or Pretense?

It is the moral aim of every (or at least most) believer(s) to portray the humble trait because it reflects the very nature of Jesus here on earth but sometimes we go out of line trying to keep this up. We are always exhorted to be humble before our Maker and not to bite the fingers that feed us. But is it possible to be humble towards God our Creator and not our neighbors who are His creatures? It seems that way with most people.

They say familiarity breeds contempt and it is true. Most people are comfortable ‘acting’ humble towards people who are above us in status but it is difficult to display this quality towards our equals. “Why should i? We are peers! I think I might even be older than him/her!” one would think.

As it was quoted in our Daily Bread, our love for God is only as real as what we show towards our neighbor. This means you can’t possibly feel a deep love for God and a strong hatred for your neighbor whom you can see with your naked eyes. It is the same with humility. If you have a humble heart before God, then it should not be effortful to have one towards your neighbors.

As humans as we are, our knowledge of someone’s personality kind of determines our level of respect or humility we show towards others. So to keep face, we ‘pretend’ to be humble towards them but who are we deceiving?

I know it is difficult to be humble towards people we think don’t deserve our respect but we should understand that being humble isn’t about the other person. It is up to us. It should be our decision to make. To be humble towards all without reservation should be our aim if we truly want to reflect the nature of Christ.

Pretense is a subtle form of rebellion and it is not healthy because it is made up of bottled-up resentment on a timed bomb ready to explode. It will almost definitely burst out one day and you will surprise yourself with how ‘dramatic’ you reacted.

Let’s pray to God to give us the strength to be humble towards Him and among ourselves as well. Humility is a trait that really pleases God because it allows Him to have His way in our lives and makes us give Him the reverence He duly deserves.

Be humble in mind and spirit.

Have a humble-conscious day, folks!
