Jo’s Devotions 06/02/2014: Chastisement Is Out Of Love
Thank God for ushering us into this month of June and I believe with great hope that this month will be filled with blessings, answered prayers and all-round joy throughout.
We as individuals represent the image of our Father in heaven and even more so, our earthly parents. We are raised in such a way that we reflect the values and ideals of our parents. It is every parent’s aim to raise a responsible, upright and respectable person; the same way it is everyone’s fear and heartache to see his/her child as the black sheep of the society.
The same way God expects us to be perfect as He is perfect (Matthew 5: 48), it is our parents’ desire to see us live godly satisfying lives. The way they raise us may not always seem pleasant to us but the reproving and chastening features of discipline are responsible for how we turned to be today.
Discipline is usually seen as the domain of the father and most fathers do well to keep their wards on track-sometimes resorting to harsh measures. It is not out of hatred or contempt but out of love for us.
Likewise God corrects our carnal ways by chastising us.
“My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth”-Proverbs 3:11-12 (KJV).
As we will soon be celebrating our fathers, let’s make it a point to make this month all about appreciate our dads. They have done well in raising us just as our heavenly Father has taken good care of us up to now.
