Before I get into this topic, I want to be real with you all. I don’t want to tell you what you should or shouldn’t wear, and I’m not going to say that you’re an awful person if you don’t dress a certain way. I just want to offer some pointers and share with you both Biblical thoughts and some thoughts of my own on modesty.
Summer time is coming, and with it comes a lot of immodesty. I was at a theme park recently, and it seemed that every time I turned there was another person who was not being at all modest. It’s becoming more and more popular to wear short – shorts and crop tops, and it’s not always easy to be modest, or even find modest clothes. So how can Christians – boy or girl – stay modest?
I think we have to be aware of the way we are presenting ourselves, and what kind of people we are attracting when we dress in a way that does not glorify God. Sure, boys might look at you, but are they the kind of boys you’re interested in? Boys – those shirtless pictures might attract girls, but are they the quality Christian girls you want to be with? If we were to take a step back and think about this stuff, maybe our choices would be different. A more disturbing factor is that you aren’t just attracting that cute boy in the corner’s lust – that old man passing by is seeing the same thing.
It’s also good to remember a few things when you’re out shopping for clothes. For example – Girls, when you wear leggings without covering up your backside, it’s not the best picture of modesty. In fact, a lot of teenage boys and men have admitted that leggings are one of the most popular ways to get them to lust after you. It’s especially hard for girls to find a cute pair of shorts and not show everything your mama gave you! I recommend coming up with a length you feel is good to stick to, and that you feel spiritual peace about wearing. Maybe even take a Christian friend or good Christian lady you look up to with you when you go shopping. That way you can make sure that it looks appropriate on the outside. Try sitting down and bending down, too – just to make sure they still cover it all up.
Boys – when you wear those shirts that have the sides open, it’s hard for a lot of girls to not lust after you. Also, those pictures you upload of yourself shirtless or in boxers are not the most appropriate way to attract a girl. While it’s nice to see yourself as someone’s “Man Crush Monday”, your faith and personality should be the thing the right girl is attracted to – not your six-pack. Quality guys are more important to Godly girls than the way your body looks.
To finish this out, I want to share this verse with you all. I feel like we can all get a good look at the importance of modesty in this verse:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Modest Is Hottest….
