Jo’s Devotions 03/03/14: Make Prayer Your First Option

We like to think that we are in control of our lives; that we are capable of handling whatever life throws at us. So whenever the ball’s in our court, we run around with it, dribble with it to and fro trying to dunk it in the net but no matter the move we make, we never make the goal. So we stand there with the ball stuck in our hands, frustrated and finally look up for help.

Maybe it is human nature but we have the tendency to believe that we always have things under control. Perhaps it is to prove to ourselves that we know how to take care of ourselves. But life has an interesting way of frustrating all our efforts and proving to us the fact that it takes more than being human to survive in this world. After all said and done, we drop to our knees and ask God for help.

But God doesn’t want to be our last resort. He wants us to call on Him first. Why waste time struggling in vain to handle situations which only He can? We should not think that asking God for help is a sign of weakness; it rather shows a strength of character because His strength takes over and His help is all we need.

Maybe we feel we don’t deserve to call on Him for help because we have disappointed Him more times than we can count and so we are not worthy to enter His presence. But we have to keep in mind that the precious blood that Christ shed for us is powerful enough to cleanse us of all our sins. We tend to still feel guilty about our past sins even after we have confessed them because we refused to forgive ourselves and as long as we hold on to them, the guilt remains. But we are urged to “…come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” Hebrews 4:16 (KJV).

Let us not make prayer our very last option. Calling on God the very minute we find ourselves in a hard place proves to God that we fully trust Him fully to take care of it and He will never come short of your expectations.
