Through Maddy’s Eyes: Winter Jam 2014 Review

Winter Jam is one of my favorite parts of the year. Yes, it is completely chaotic. Yes, it is a struggle to find a place in line. And yes, waiting in line for multiple hours in the cold isn’t much fun to most people. BUT, I am not “most people.” I am a crazy, concert-going person, and I will go to any concert I possibly can. This girl won’t let some cold weather and lots of standing stop her!

Winter Jam was about a week ago in St. Louis, and it started at 6:00. Doors opened at 5, and my family got there about 2 (My whole family was bugged all morning by yours truly, because I wanted to get there as early as possible!). I was so happy to get there, and I was excited to see the line-up this year. About two hours into waiting for the doors to open, Love And The Outcome walked outside- right in front of me(!!!!)

They did a few songs, and said if anyone wanted their album they’d sign them. My dad and I looked at each other at the same time, and I ran up to get an album and get it signed. Jodi and Chris are so sweet, and the story of their musical journey is beyond inspiring! I thought it was neat how they came out to say hi to everyone.

After about an hour, doors opened. My brother and I were sent to go find our family seats, because I’ve become good at weaving my way through crowds from past concert experience. Not really sure how long it took me to get us both though the small mob that was trying to get to the front, but it was longer than I thought it would be. We finally got seats, and everyone met up with us.

I got up to go look at merch, and to explore. I love getting up and seeing everything that’s set up. Even though I don’t like to buy a lot- unless it’s a TobyMac concert (That’s my weakness!). I just like to explore it all, and take it in. After all, it’s a whole year until I get to be able to do it again!

I was quite impressed by Derek Minor and Love and The Outcome. Derek brought Lecrae out and they rapped together for a bit. I love Lecrae, and I’m happy that he was on the tour this year.

I was excited for Colton Dixon, as well. I am such a huge fan of him! I recently got to see him on the Hits Deep Tour, and I absolutely loved him! Oh, funny story- last year I went to the Dove Awards, and I was walking around a bit after it was over. Anyway, I ran into someone. I looked up, and was startled to see it was Colton Dixon! I just walked away. I don’t think he saw me, which is good, because that would have been really embarrassing!

He was great, as usual. When Tenth Avenue North came on, I got really excited. I have seen them live a couple of times, and I can’t explain how much I like them. I’ve wanted to meet the band so much, but it hasn’t happened yet. The good news is that they’re coming to Camp Electric this summer, and I am more than determined to meet them. I will do it! They were SO good, and Mike Donehey went out in the middle of the crowd to hug people and give them high-fives. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it when artists go out into the crowd!

Lecrae came out soon after. I was looking forward to seeing him perform “Tell The World” (I saw his set-list a while ago on Winter Jam’s Instagram account!). He did a spin on some songs, and I thought that was really cool. It was the first time I’d seen him live, and I look forward to seeing him again.. He blows me away!

The Newsboys had a lot to bring to the concert this year. I loved seeing Duncan, the drummer, on a spinning drumset while he performed. Then, Michael Tait got off the stage and hopped up on a lift, taking him high up into the crowd. It was very neat, and I hope to attend a full concert by them at some point!

Newsong and all of the other bands did a great job, too. I loved the line-up this year, and I can’t wait to see what the next Winter Jam tour brings!

Did anyone else go to Winter Jam this year? What did you guys think?
